EPISODE 13: Jonathan Green
Author, editor and games designer

Greetings fellow Mythics!

This month we’ve a very talented and creative guest in the guise of author, editor, and games designer Jonathan Green. Well known for penning seven Fighting Fantasy gamebooks, five Doctor Who novels, and eighteen Pax Britannia novels, Jonathan is the author of over seventy books!

From 2015 Jonathan launched his ACE gamebook series and to date there have been five books published with the sixth Dracula: Curse of the Vampire due this year (2021). He also has started to develop and write RPGs with ‘‘Twas’ and his currently live Kickstarter campaign for ‘Heorot’.

We chat about Jonathan’s writing influences, his early career breaking into freelance writing, his Fighting Fantasy, Doctor Who and ACE gamebook writing career amongst other things. Oh, and we find out Jonathan’s favourite tipple!

And yes, we play ‘Consider the Fantasy Consequences!’ so everyone’s happy.

I hope you enjoy this Mythical Tales from Edra episode lovingly recorded from the delightful Drop of Dew Inn.

Once again, no actual pubs were visited in the making of this pubcast…

EPISODE 12: Julian Newman Turner
Photographer and film maker

Greetings fellow Mythics!

Due to UK Lockdown 2.0, no actual pubs were visited in the making of this pubcast, although let’s pretend we’re in The Travellers’ Nook Tavern, shall we?

Massively excited to chat with Julian Newman Turner, photographer and film maker, about his creative journey. You may know him as one half of the fantasy YouTube channel ‘The Bottled Imp’, (I’m the other half, but you probably know that already!) but he is much more, obviously. Starting out as an actor, Julian ran his own theatre company, Big Bubble Productions, before taking up photography and film making (Lucid Dreams Pictures).

In the warmth of The Travellers’ Nook Tavern, we chat about the his acting experiences, running a creative business, making films on a shoestring, and the joy, but also the struggles, of being creative, and Julian’s latest creative venture, the YouTube channel ‘Mindspuke’.

We also discover Julian’s preferences when we play ‘Consider the Fantasy Consequences!’

I hope you enjoy this Mythical Tales from Edra episode lovingly recorded from The Travellers’ Nook Tavern, where the beer is warm and the locals are cold!

EPISODE 11: Arthur Kidawa - World of Monsters
Writer, film maker, and host of World of Monsters

Greetings fellow Mythics!

There’s a lot of chat to be had when interviewing engaging guests. So much in fact September’s pubcast is in two parts! Double the fun!

Once again, no actual pubs were visited in the making of this pubcast, although let’s pretend we’re in The Bleeding Badger Tavern, shall we?

Hugely thrilled to invite Arthur Kidawa, the man (or monster?) behind the ‘World of Monsters’ YouTube channel, into our warm and friendly (well, warm at least!) pub as we chat monsters (naturally), creating a YouTube channel, starting a Patreon to share your creations, creating art, travelling the world, and even spirituality!

We also discover Arthur’s preferences when we play ‘Consider the Fantasy Consequences!’

I hope you enjoy this Mythical Tales from Edra episode lovingly recorded from The Bleeding Badger Tavern, where the beer is warm and the locals are cold!

EPISODE 10: Gavin Boyter
Writer, film maker, ultra-runner (and my cousin!)

Greetings fellow Mythics!

We loved the two-part special last month so much we decided to do it again! Well, almost. It wasn’t planned but this month’s special guest and myself rambled on for an age! So, this is Part 1 with Part 2 out soon. Probably by the time you read this.

“Keep it in the family they say,” so I did! This month’s special guest is a writer, a film maker, an ultra-runner, but more importantly he’s my cousin! It’s Gavin Boyter...

Once again, no actual pubs were visited in the making of this pubcast, although let’s pretend we’re in The Rusty Axe Tavern, shall we?

I first met Gavin, unsurprisingly, when we were kids; my family lived in Hertfordshire with his living in Edinburgh. Once a year for a good many a year, I would be excited to travel up on the night coach and spend a week or so visiting all of my Scottish recitatives. Normally we’d spend a day or so with Gavin and his family and I’ve fond memories of jumping off swings in the park, making up silly stories, and generally buffooning around with him, my brother and his sister.

As a kid, you rarely think about what people will be doing in ten, two or even thirty years time or what journey in life they have taken. Gavin has lead an interesting and some would say, unconventional life. He has written and directed a feature film, ‘Sparks and Embers’, written a published book, ‘Downhill From Here,’ and has another one, ‘Running the Orient,’ due out next month (14th August).

As we delved into various subjects such as the nature of creativity, early forays into the film making business, and his failed attempts at writing a novel, I discovered there is a lot more to Gavin than I knew, and we’re family!

I hope you enjoy this Mythical Tales from Edra episode lovingly recorded from The Rusty Axe Tavern, the only pub in Ferrum’s Forge to serve Old Giant’s Toe.

As you can see from the links below, Gavin’s been a very busy boy:

EPISODE 9: Sally Straw (with God)
Theology graduate from Leeds University, a religious studies teacher, and a good all rounder

Greetings fellow Mythics!

This time is different. Different from last month’s episode and that was also different!

Special guest Sally Straw and myself made our way to Barden Clumps, a beautiful little bit of woodland, and made it our virtual pub garden for an afternoon. No actual pub gardens were visited in the making of this pubcast.

This month’s show is also different in content. Rather than finding out more about our guest, their creative processes and projects, I thought it was time to chat about a topic I’ve been wanting to delve into for a while: is the Bible a fantasy book?

To guide us through this fascinating topic is someone more qualified to do so than me (not very hard!), is Sally Straw. She is a theology graduate from Leeds University, a religious studies teacher, and a good all rounder. We focus on fantasy creatures of the bible. We’re they really fantasy or real? Or were they just a mistranslation from the original language?

We hope to discover the truth. We don’t find it obviously, as it’s impossible to know, but we did have a jolly interesting fining out while the booze was flowing and the snacks were snacking.

I hope you enjoy this Mythical Tales from Edra episode lovingly recorded from the beautiful Barden Clumps.

EPISODE 8: Olly Mc
Photographer, performer, games designer,
and storyteller

This time it's different. This is the Mythical Tales from Edra Virtual Pubcast: Lock-In Edition! Yes, this edition comes from The Sword & Flagon Inn, but before you say, “How’s that possible?” it's by the magic of the virtual realm. No actual pubs were visited in the making of this pubcast.
We chat (among other things) about Olly’s love of Fighting Fantasy, Legend, Role Playing Games. We also delve deeper into the business side of trying to forge a career as a creative by chatting about Olly’s current card game series, The StoryMaster's Tales Hybrid Roleplaying Game, and his fantasy storytelling theatre based in Rye. All while I get drunk on cider...
